Watermelon

At NipponFruit Co., Ltd., we’re proud to bring you Japan’s finest fruits. Currently in season are our unique “Spring Watermelons” from Kumamoto, a city acclaimed for its premium watermelon cultivation.

In contrast to the usual summer watermelons, Kumamoto’s prized harvest occurs from March to June. Our selection originates from Ueki town, a nationally renowned brand known for high-quality, abundant watermelon production.

These watermelons come in different sizes, each with distinct characteristics. The smaller variety, perfect for refrigerator storage, is becoming increasingly popular due to its higher sugar content and thin rind.

What sets these Ueki watermelons apart is their exceptional sweetness. While the average watermelon has a sugar level of 9 to 10%, Ueki’s watermelons average at an impressive 13%—on par with strawberries. This sweetness permeates all the way to the rind, offering an indulgent treat to the last bite.

Large Watermelons

The Large watermelons, often associated with traditional watermelon imagery, are characterized by a delightful crunchy texture and a robust aroma. They are the epitome of a satisfying, refreshing fruit, perfect for sharing on a warm day. Their impressive size adds to the joy of cracking open this juicy treat, revealing the ripe, red interior packed with natural sweetness.

Product

We offer Large Watermelons in a package of two, with a total weight of approximately 15kg. These watermelons are available from late April through late July.

Small Watermelons

On the other hand, the smaller watermelons have a charm of their own. They are perfect for individual consumption, fit comfortably in a fridge, and come in an impressive array of varieties. Some of the popular ones include:

Hitorijime

A cultivar known for its exceptionally sweet taste, Hitorijime is the perfect one-person watermelon that is as delightful as its name suggests, which translates to “all for oneself.”

Manamusume

Literally meaning “daughter of love,” Manamusume watermelons possess a high sugar content, with a delicately soft pulp that’s just waiting to be enjoyed.

Higo Temari

Named after the traditional Japanese handball, Higo Temari watermelons are petite and round with a high sugar content and thin skin. They are as delightful to look at as they are to taste.

Kuro Kodama

This variety stands out with its unique black skin. However, it’s what’s inside that counts – a highly sweet and juicy flesh that promises an unforgettable tasting experience.

These small watermelons, with sugar levels as high as strawberries, are a testament to Kumamoto’s successful cultivation techniques, pushing the boundaries of sweetness to the rind’s edge.

Whether you choose a large watermelon for its classic appeal or opt for the small ones for their diverse taste profiles and convenient size, Kumamoto’s watermelons are sure to offer a rewarding fruit experience. Dive into Japan’s rich fruit culture with NipponFruit Co., Ltd.
